“Escargot”

by Dashka Slater, illustrated by Sydney Hanson

Escargot is a beautiful French snail who only wants to be your favorite animal and get to the delicious salad at the end of the book, even if he has to try a carrot, which he hates.

WATCH and LISTEN to Dashka Slater read her book Escargot for MacKids Operation Storytime:

Fingerplay: Dashka’s Snail Poem

(shushing finger to lips) Sssh! Sssh! Sssh!
(finger wag) Be careful (megaphone hands) not to yell.
(horn hands) The shy little snail
(look around) peeks outside his shell.
(sweeping motion with one hand) He leaves a shimmery trail
(slowly) (horn hands) as he sloooooowly slips and slides.
(hand to ear) But when he hears me (feet stomp) stomp stomp stomp,
(rapidly) he hides his head inside. (tuck into a ball)

Rhyme: Carrots For Lunch

Out in the garden, under the sun.
Grew lots of carrots, so I picked some.
I took them inside and washed the whole bunch.
Then I sat down and ate them for my lunch.

Chant: Carrots You Are My Favorite

Carrot, carrot—you are my favorite!
Rabbits go munch, munch, munch!
Carrot, carrot—you are my favorite!
I’d like to have you for lunch, lunch, lunch!

Song: The Vegetable Song (tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)

Carrots, Peas, and Broccoli,
Vegetables are good for me.
For my snack and in my lunch,
Veggie sticks are great to munch.
Carrots, Peas, and Broccoli,
Vegetables are good for me.
